Autism is a developmental disability that affects social, cognitive and behavioral challenges. Their brains process information differently than people without autism. Most young people exhibit symptoms of autism by the age of 3.
As explained by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders, the word autism is a Greek word in which "autos" means "self." Children with autism may seem like they live in their own worlds, thus communication issues often arise. Not every child with autism will have communication issues. In fact, most children with autism will not have problems pronouncing words, rather they will have difficulty in using language correctly, particularly when communicating with other people.
Below is a screenshot from the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders that explains some of the most common communication issues and behavior issues found in children with autism.
