Choice cards allow students with autism some degree of choice in their work. More independence is given to these students, as well. This would be great in my 8th grade classroom for some of my students with autism as they need to gain autonomy while still being given direction. The possible choices on the card indicate what the child may do during the time in class. According to Specialed.us, the child is less likely to act out as they are able to make their own choices in the classroom (source: http://www.specialed.us/autism/assist/asst13.htm). Students with non verbal communication disabilities can simply point and choose which option they would like to complete. In addition, a teacher can also point to the choice card for a student with motor skill disabilities.
