Previously, I have been writing about the assistive technology students use in the classroom. Many of these students have IEPs that specify the assistive technologies that students may use, but what are the considerations of an IEP. This blog post will help explain the IEP process and considerations specifically related to assistive technology.
According to the laws set forth in IDEA, students with disabilities are to receive an IEP or Individualized Eduation Program. The services, including assistive technology, is outlined in the IEP. In the IEP, there are several components but it is in part C "special considerations," D "Statement of Special Education and Related Services," E "Supplmentary Aids and Services, and F "Program Modification and Supports" that assistive technology is included. See the example below

There are 5 special factors that the IEP team must consider. The 5th special factor is titled "assistive technology," and it must be considered in the IEP process, according to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities (NICHCY.org). This site provides a tutorial on assistive technology in the IEP process and a download of helpful information

I have had very little experience with IEPs and technology. It was nice to see your post here to help with implementing technology in an IEP. IDEA made assistive technology a natural piece of the IEP, but how are we supposed to learn how to use them without prior experience.
