Past Event Cards for Students with Autism

Past Event Cards

Children with autism have difficulty recalling past events.  A great way to help these students is to to create a visual representation for them to recall events, such as what has taken place between home and school.  A generic template can be created by educators to help these students.  According to the Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative, one idea is to have a template that can be easily circled or filled out each day and sent home or to school.  This will relay information about what has occurred (source: Stokes, S., Wirkus-Pallaske, M, and Reed, P. (2000) Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative)

For example a past event card may say:

Today, I: made my woke up, made my ________________, and watched a television show about _______________________.  The activities that occurred that day would be circled or filled in.

  1. Angela,

One of my best friends has a daughter on the autism disorder spectrum and she often has helped her daughter cope with new situations by giving her information about an event that is going to occur. I distinctly remember her prepping her daughter for her first trip to the dentist. These past event cards are a new twist for me; I certainly can see it's use in a situation where she has to go to the dentist again! Very neat idea.

  2. Angela,

I think your post on past events cards was very informational. I like the idea of having a card or paper where the student can circle options or fill them out on their own. This is something that can be sent home daily and can easily help to communicate with their family and keep them updated on what their child is doing in school. This paper can also be completed at home and can be sent in to the teacher.
