According to Assistive Technology in the Classroom, virtual manipulatives may help students develop skills in math classes to learn math concepts, skills and problem solving. Teachers must keep in mind, however, that these virtual manipulatives must be match to the students developmental levels and the concept they are learning. As a history teacher, I am always speaking of problem solving. Although these are virtual math manipulatives, the concept of using problem solving is a 21st century skill all students need. Below are a few suggested virtual math manipulatives:
Math Playground is a free online program that helps students learn math concepts, skills, and problem solving. Word problems are included, which as a social studies teacher allows me to connect problem solving with math.

Hi, I really enjoy teaching math and helping students understand math concepts. Oftentimes word problems are very difficult for students. I lead not explored the Math Playground website in detail, but after reading your post I will. It sounds really helpful!
