Integrating Augementative Communication into the IEP

A students’ IEP  guides how communication will be taught to a student.  In the IEP, the augmentive commincation device or plan is included.  If augmented communication is deemed necessary the IEP should also include the use of a communication system for the student.  Some examples would be opportunities to practice commincation and his or her academic goals and objectives throught the use of the augmented communication system.  The textbook also explains that it is important how the students use of an augmented communication device will be a part of his or her day during instructional and noninstructional time.  Alignment and collaboration between teachers, parents, student, and IEP teacher must occur.  The augmented communication device is meant to help a student achieve their goal; the device is not the goal itself.  Services and maintenance of the device also must be included in the IEP.
